Winter in Nippori
acrylic 30″ x 24″
Nippori is a suburb on the fringe of Tokyo city, just 15 minutes away from the Shinagawa train station. It is a shogentai ( shopping street ) that is lined with artisanal shops making pottery, textiles, teas; mum and pop cafes, temples and shrines and a famous rice cracker shop that dates back to the ancient Edo period.
It was a cold winter morning when I noticed this tree limb as I looked up into the sky. It gave me an inspiration to paint it when I got home from my trip. The bare branches of the tree broke up the blue sky and clouds. The sky is never one solid color but a subtle shade of blues and whites giving it a mosaic kind of sky.-
